Live Show Technical Questions
Questions to my European friends or to any bands from North America that have toured in Europe with their own gear (some of you will have no clue what I'm talking about.. but I'm hoping someone might):

1. I've been told that my wireless Shure SM 58 Beta with PGX24 system will not work properly in Europe? Something about the frequency differences? Does anyone have any other information about this? Should I not bother bringing it? Also, I recently bought the PSM200 Wireless Personal Monitor system too to combat the trouble with bass and rumble I have on stage making it hard for me to hear pitch of songs etc, All I really ever hear is the oontz to be honest. It's weird. I'm just wondering if I should I ditch the gear for Europe? (any one with experience with any input is appreciated)

2. Has anyone had custom molds done for the in ear system? My tiny ears didn't really fit the standard ones that came with the system. I used it on the Combichrist tour and it helped a lot to hear the music but near the end of the set, they fell out (it never felt like I could get them far enough in). Do I have to go to a hearing specialist to get the molds done?

2. Also, does anyone have a Nord Lead II travel case they want to sell me? I need one, like right now ;)

I have a wireless Beta 58 with PGX24 and it works fine - the frequency will be a different range of course in Europe (and even in the UK) than the US. Mine is 800-821MHz (this is written underneath).

Yours should work just fine, however it will probably not technically be licensed for use in the UK. As a result, there may be a greater chance of interference however this is only a maybe.

What frequency range is written under the PGX4 receiver?

That's good to hear. Sounds like you have the exact same set up as me. The PGX24 receiver is 518-554MHz? Knowing you used everything successfully gives me a bit of confidence to bring at least the microphone (IF I had to choose). Thanks!

I know a few people who have commented on range from the stage to the desk, but I get around that by putting the PGX4 on stage then DI into the house system. Never had a problem.

I'm seeing gear being sold to the UK that covers the range 518 - 866MHz so I reckon it will be ok, however as always with wireless gear it's a good idea to have a backup plan just in case :) (and of course make sure you or your techs know how to choose a good frequency which on the PGX4 is as simple as pushing the button, then unscrewing the battery cover of the Beta 58, pushing the button and pointing the IR receiver on the base at the PGX4).

...oh yes - I also use a PSM200 (great minds purchase alike...) - never had a problem with that either but again I set it up on stage so I'm never really more than 15m away from it.

hi, first of, sad you don't do belgium this time,
and keep up the good work, looking forward to new stuff, I know it's a sad period, but I also know music/creative can help you heal/survive/etc..

now the technical business, I stopped using wireless gear on small locations because it wrecked the gigs (signal loss, distortions, ..), but that's just our experience..
(but if the locations or PA themselves have wireless gear, then we do use it)

all the best

I know. No Belgium :( I don't book the tours so it's out of my hands. Thanks for the warm thoughts and nice comments.

As for tech stuff. I've never had a problem with wireless gear. I've actually had less feedback and sound issues since I started using my wireless stuff strange :)

Then I guess we should try the Shure SM 58 PGX24..
Good to know!
As for Belgium, lets pray for another Alfa-Matrix festival :)

your wireless system should be fine. that's the same system [info]nerozero uses, although his isn't a beta, and we never had a problem in europe. and in theory, you have to go to an audiologist for the ear mold things.

Ok, also good. I really didn't want to leave that microphone behind, it's my baby and I want to use it when and if I can. The more feedback I get of people who use that same model sucessfully, the better... and the beta is better than the non beta.

By the way, I THOUGHT you might respond to these questions! You know, technical questions and all ;) By the way, "Audiologist" is just a fancy word for "guy who checks your hearing and ear stuff". I've never been to one because I have perfect 20/20 hearing. Haha ;)

shit, i totally fell in to your trap :( you know how much i love making people think i know what i'm talking about.

and i thought audiologists were different? usually if you have hearing problems you go to one of those ear/nose/throat people, don't you?

Audiologists check your hearing ability and hearing disorders specifically, whereas an ear, nose and throat specialist ("Otolaryngologist" if you want the 20-point scrabble word for them, but my grandfather never went by that) would be responsible for causative issues like infections, injuries, etc.

So yes, an audiologist would be the person to go to get specialized ear fittings. It's actually not at all uncommon with people who use in-ear monitors for a living. Might want to ask them first if that's something they have any experience in doing before committing to an appointment...

Or not so know-it-all.

Forgot to add: Audiologists are the same people that fit and calibrate hearing aids and similar devices. Kind of an important thing to know about them...

Hey Jenn,

What frequency does your equipment operate on? Based on this, you can then find out if anybody else (or anything else for that matter) is broadcasting on the same channel. Try googling the frequency ranges and see what u come up with. Technically speaking, there are eight groups of frequency allocations as follows, each with a different specifed usage (short-wave radio, 802.11, Wi-Max, etc).

10 kHz to 30 kHz Very Low Frequency (VLF)
30 kHz to 300 kHz Low Frequency (LF)
300 kHz to 3 MHz Medium Frequency (MF)
3 MHz to 30 MHz High Frequency (HF)
30 MHz to 144 MHz
144 MHz to 174 MHz
174 MHz to 328.6 MHz Very High Frequency (VHF)
328.6 MHz to 450 MHz
450 MHz to 470 MHz
470 MHz to 806 MHz
806 MHz to 960 MHz
960 MHz to 2.3 GHz
2.3 GHz to 2.9 GHz Ultra High Frequency (UHF)
2.9 GHz to 30 GHz Super High Frequency (SHF)
30 GHz and above Extremely High Frequency (EHF)

Based on the above, you can then find out where exactly your gear fits on this spectrum, and then find out what other services may transmit using these ranges in the cities in which you will be performing. For example, if your equipment operates at a short range (GHz), you may have to deal with things like LMDS, which I believe is a technology in Europe used to transmit television wirelessly.

In the case of interference, a signal is capable of completely jamming another if it is transmitted on the same frequency exactly 180 degrees out of phase. Thus, there is always a minute possibility of error given such an electromagnetic wave exists within your range of communication.

Aside from this, a good thing to also find out is what chipping sequence or modulation scheme your gear uses to transmit with (OFDM, FM, AM, etc). Although this probably won't ever even be an issue with such a device, it's a good thing to know in situations like these.

Sorry for the extremely large post but I hope at least some of this might help out :).

Take care!

I heard you were playing Slimes.

As a result I will have to be there.

Of course, I will bring Jaffa cakes...

I hope that you find some new loyal fans in Poland like me. I have seen you first time in my life at Gothic Festival in No Mercy club and I nearly fall in love with you :-) Some technical problems which happened with microphone, really doesn't matter in feeling your music, but I think it was the console operator and sound system fault, not your microphone system.

Now I can say - Your music positively kicks my ass and gives me so much energy for gray fall days. You gave a great show to Polish people and I'd like to thank you for making me happy this night.

Greetings from Warsaw
- Piottr

Slimelight has such a small stage that wireless or not doesn't make much difference to be honest. I hope that you have Bob doing your sound - he is the best Slimelight engineer.

Actually, I used to play it live. There were a few shows back in 2004 when we were touring in Canada where we played it. I love that song but it's a bit long and with 2 CD's out, it's tough to choose which tracks to play off the old CD.. I do still sing a part of that track on the intro track on our last European tour ;)

Thanks for your interest.
Sincerely,
Jennifer

Somehow time I climbed on is not present and, asking questions, found interesting and not so interesting answers. One of which was - « FailureAccident on the Chernobyl atomic power station, 4 power unit ». I became interesting and thumbing through sites was simply horrified. One I the fellow worker, in the past the meter man, has told about the friend which was the liquidator of consequences of this failureaccident, the truth or not I do not know. But spoke that - « firemen which extinguished a fire there, by turns washed in a showersoul groups, and muzhiks because of an irradiation were shone in darkness, but to live ithim remains few hours ».
